Know Before You Go: Tips for First-time Convention Attendees

Attending a convention for the first time? See our top tips and plan ahead to make the most of your time in San Diego!

Pack comfortable shoes.
Conventions involve a lot of walking. Between sessions, networking areas, food spots, and your hotel, you could reach 10,000+ steps without trying. To balance comfort and professionalism, opt for sleek sneakers, cushioned loafers, or other shoes that won’t leave you with blisters by day two.

Bring layers.
Since you’ll probably spend time inside and outside, bringing a light sweater or jacket will keep you comfortable. If you bought a new blazer or skirt for your event, be sure to remove all tags and vent strings before you arrive. (It's a common mistake to leave them attached!)

Save a link to our building map.
Check to see if your convention organizer offers a mobile app with a map for the event. If not, be sure to bookmark our general map so you can quickly find your way to meeting rooms, exhibits, and restrooms.

Hydrate.
Between the coffee breaks and happy hours, it’s easy to forget about water. Bring a reusable water bottle to refill at one of our many hydration stations to stay healthy and energized.

Download the Mamava app for access to lactation pods.
If you’re a nursing parent, the Mamava app will give you secure access to our clean, private lactation pods. The app also provides helpful information about pod availability and supplemental mothers lounges available here.

Bring business cards or a quick way to connect.
Make it easy to stay in touch with the people you meet. Bring a stack of business cards or set up a QR code on your phone that goes to your LinkedIn profile or website.

If you struggle with small talk, break the ice by talking about San Diego—restaurant recommendations, San Diego-centered movies (Anchorman, Top Gun...), or any experiences visiting local attractions like the San Diego Zoo or Petco Park

Plan your must-see sessions and events.
It’s easy to lose track of time. Review your event schedule ahead of time and mark your top priorities so you don’t miss them. When possible, build in extra time to navigate crowds, go through any security checks, and grab a morning beverage at the start of each day.

Don’t miss the view.
Take a moment to step outside and enjoy our waterfront location. The San Diego Bay offers a perfect backdrop for photos and breaks.

Stay longer if you can!
San Diego offers award-winning dining, entertainment, and attractions just steps from the Convention Center. If your schedule allows, tack on extra days to explore the Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, local beaches, and neighborhoods across the region.
