Rip Rippetoe Becomes Chair of the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) Board

Today our San Diego Convention Center President and CEO Clifford "Rip" Rippetoe becomes the Chair of the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) Board of Directors. In this leadership role, he will focus on the organization’s overall goals and strategies, ensuring IAVM is valuable to its 7,000+ members worldwide.

"As an IAVM member for more than 30 years, I owe much of my career success to the education, networking and mentorship I have received through the organization," Rippetoe said.

"This is a time for strong, consistent leadership. Our association and our venues must ensure all people are safe and feel welcomed and respected. I am committed to supporting our members as they navigate the pandemic and to building an association where all individuals can thrive, standing together against any forms of bias. I look forward to serving as Chair to continue its positive and proactive path forward."

Founded in 1924, IAVM is composed of venue professionals, suppliers and senior executives from auditoriums, arenas, convention centers, exhibit halls, stadiums, performing arts centers, university complexes, amphitheaters and fairgrounds. Its mission is to educate, advocate for, and inspire public assembly venue professionals worldwide.

The passing of the gavel traditionally takes place with an in-person presentation. Like many 2020 events, this ceremony will take place via Zoom instead, broadcast virtually to venue professionals this afternoon.

Rippetoe has been an IAVM member since 1988. In Spring 2018, he became the Second Vice Chair of the IAVM Board of Directors, which began his progression toward Chair. Rippetoe has a long and successful career in venue management and operations, working in the for-profit sector as well as nonprofit and governmental organization sectors. Before assuming his leadership role at the San Diego Convention Center, he was President and CEO of the Kentucky State Fair Board.

In the July/August issue of IAVM's Venue Professional Magazine, Senior Editor R.V. Baugus wrote:

"While he might have picked a different set of circumstances to begin his one-year term as Chair of IAVM, our good friend Rip Rippetoe, CVE, is an individual more than capable to take the reins from the outstanding work of Tammy Koolbeck, CVE, and continue guiding IAVM as we continue working toward the reopening of our industry in increments. Rip has worn many hats at many sectors in his illustrious career, which will come in handy as he along with IAVM and its membership navigate change in the coming months and years."

The issue features an in-depth profile of Rip and a fun caricature of IAVM leadership navigating a boat through uncharted waters. After Rippetoe's one-year term as Chair, he will become Immediate Past Chair before leaving the IAVM Board.
