San Diego's largest and most lucrative medical gathering of the fiscal
year, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) 2007 Annual
Meeting, will take place Feb. 14-18 at the San Diego Convention Center.
Thirty-thousand out-of-town attendees will generate $112.9 million
regional economic impact making this the highest economic generating
event of FY07 (July 1, 2006 – June 30, 2007.) The City of San Diego will
receive an estimated $1.8 million in tax revenues. Delegates, exhibitors
and other attendees will fill 15,500 hotel rooms spread out among more
than 60 area hotels stretching from downtown San Diego to La Jolla.
The group will occupy the entire building including more than half a
million square feet of exhibit space and 200,000 square feet of meeting
space. AAOS is on the prestigious Tradeshow Week 200 list representing
the nation’s largest tradeshows and our industry’s most sought after
events. Many medical shows mean big business, not only in size, but in
economic benefits for host cities. The Convention Center continues to
excel in its ability to attract lucrative medical conventions, like
AAOS, that generate enormous economic benefits for San Diego. Eighteen
medical shows are scheduled in calendar year 2007 that will infuse
$703.9 million into the local economy.
“We are honored that AAOS chose San Diego to host its annual meeting.
The Convention Center staff and our entire destination will be rolling
out the red carpet to welcome them to sunny San Diego,” said Carol
Wallace, CEO and President of the San Diego Convention Center
Corporation.
This prestigious educational gathering will generate breaking news
announcements regarding leading-edge orthopaedic treatments for troops
on the front lines, gene therapy and tissue engineering, strides in pain
management and knee replacement surgery, treatment of pro athletes and
other remarkable health topics. During the five-day event, doctors will
be giving back to the local community with daily visits to the USNS
Mercy, a 1000-bed naval hospital ship whose homeport is San Diego. In
support of the award-winning Safe, Accessible Playground building
program, a coalition of orthopaedic surgeons, their families, industry
partners and related organizations are also devoting a day to Playground
Build 2007 where they’ll help construct a safe, wheelchair-accessible
play structure in a Chula Vista neighborhood park.
The AAOS media contact is Georgi Bohrad, (619) 696-8018; (760) 803-4522.
The on-site press room is located in Room 23AB.
