(San Diego) March 22, 2010 – Skip Jurus, doorman/lobby director for the San Diego Convention Center Corporation (SDCCC), was awarded the 2009 James V. Cunningham Personalized Service Award. This award honors the individual who, regardless of palpable pressures and demands, consistently displays a willingness to serve. It is one of the Gold Key Awards annually presented by the San Diego County Hotel-Motel Association and the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International to deserving employees in the hospitality industry.
“Skip is the embodiment of the James V. Cunningham Personalized Service Award – he is willing to extend himself in any way necessary to ensure our guests receive the five-star treatment they have come to expect when they visit the San Diego Convention Center,” said SDCCC President and CEO Carol Wallace. “It’s what we refer to at the Convention Center as ‘San Diego Spirit’ a total service commitment by every employee to proudly represent and personally welcome every guest who comes to visit America’s Finest City.”
The San Diego Convention Center was the first facility in the nation to employ uniformed doormen to personally greet its guests. Skip was not only the Convention Center’s first doormen, but was one of the first employees hired more than 20 years ago. It is estimated that he has welcomed more than 12 million visitors from around the world who have walked through our doors since 1989.
Prior to working at the Convention Center, Skip was an equipment mechanic at the Naval Repair Depot at North Island for more than 25 years. He came to San Diego from Pennsylvania when he enlisted as a “See Bee” with the US Navy. Skip is also a professional photographer, capturing on film the amazing transformation of San Diego’s downtown redevelopment over the last two decades.
Now celebrating 20 years of success, the Convention Center has generated $18.3 billion in regional economic impact, $364 million in tax revenues for the City of San Diego and supports 12,500 jobs countywide. The San Diego Convention Center Corporation is a public benefit corporation created by the city to exclusively market, manage and operate the 2.6 million sf waterfront facility.
