San Diego Moves Closer to Expanding Bayside Facility

In early April, the San Diego Convention Center Corporation reached a major milestone in efforts to expand the Convention Center by securing six acres of bayfront land adjacent to the current facility. The Port of San Diego, the public entity responsible for managing San Diego's tidelands property and owner of the existing Convention Center, approved the land transfer last month. This means we can move forward with plans to site a Phase III expansion alongside the current building, extending toward San Diego Bay.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, a long-time convention and meeting industry champion, supports the expansion, which will allow us to accommodate the growing square footage needs of our many valued clients. We are working toward a mid-2015 opening.

Over the next 18 to 24 months, we will reach out to clients to solicit feedback, thoughts and comments to ensure the best use of space as we finalize the design. At the same time, the city of San Diego, under Mayor Sanders’ leadership, will explore financing options for the estimated $750 million project.

We look forward to sharing future expansion developments as they occur.
