San Diego Convention Center Selects Architectural Design Team for Proposed Expansion
Increased exhibit space, sustainability and waterfront enhancements are hallmarks of new design

The San Diego Convention Center Corporation has selected the team of Fentress Architects/John Portman & Associates/Civitas Inc. to design the proposed Phase 3 expansion. When completed the Convention Center will have the largest contiguous exhibit hall on the West Coast with 750,701 square feet (sf). It will also have the largest ballroom in a convention facility on the West Coast. Highlights include a 5-acre waterfront park with stunning views of San Diego Bay, waterfront enhancements along the Embarcadero, a pedestrian promenade and more than 30,000 sf of retail and restaurant space.

SQUARE FOOTAGE SUMMARY

The plan takes advantage of San Diego’s sunny bayfront location and will increase outdoor terrace space by 70% over the current facility where attendees can mix and mingle. It also includes a new 250-500 room hotel adjacent to the building, adding even more rooms conveniently located within a few feet of the Convention Center. From top to bottom, the proposed Phase 3 expansion will be LEED certified. Fentress ranks among the Top 10 design firms in the U.S. and has been pioneering sustainable design since the early 1990s.

Architects will now work toward finalizing design concepts for the proposed expansion utilizing 6.86 acres of land adjacent to our current facility. The environmental review and permitting process is currently underway and will take 18-24 months. The estimated date for opening the Phase 3 expansion is mid-2015.
