2005 Forecasted to be strong year for Center; Solid gains expected over 2004
2005 Hotel Rate Solidly Over $200 per night
By all accounts, 2005 will be a very strong year for the San Diego Convention Center. In virtually all categories, the Center will post respectable gains: economic impact ($1 billion); total taxes generated for the City ($23 million); hotel room nights (625,262); hotel room rate generated by convention business ($203) and primary event attendance. On average, each of the 58 conventions the Center is scheduled to host next year will bring in an estimated $18.4 million to the region.
While strong, the coming year also presents us with daunting challenges. Among them are the increasing size of our competition and the willingness of their respective cities to fund rent subsidies for clients, the perception that San Diego is an expensive destination and the lack of hotel rooms in Downtown, and in particular, a headquarters hotel to our west. To maximize the Center's occupancy, as well as those of our headquarter hotels, the Center has launched a short-term business campaign (2005 & 2006) aimed at the corporate market.
For the second consecutive year, the average daily hotel rate (ADR) generated by the Convention Center will be over $200 per night. Forecast to be $205.56 per night, the ADR generated by the Center is 79% higher than the ADR for San Diego which is forecast to be $115 per night in 2005. |
